Thanks for your insightful response. I haven't read Byung-Chul Han’s work but I'll look him up! I do agree though, that communities are increasingly dispensing with rituals, and thus losing those signs of identity. It therefore follows that they're trying to recapture that identity in new and different ways, including through symbolic consumption.
